US Passport Renewal in Minnesota

Minnesota is right on the border between the US and Canada, so keeping a current, valid passport is important. Minnesota residents have a few different options when it comes time to renew their passports. If you need to renew yours, start by examining your options so that you can choose the passport renewal method that best meets your needs.

US Passport Renewal by Mail

You can renew your passport by mail as long as all of the following statements apply:
  • You are in possession of your current passport.

  • Your current passport is in good condition, and hasn't been damaged, torn or otherwise mutilated.

  • Your current passport was issued less than 15 years ago, and it was issued after your 16th birthday.

  • You have legal documentation to back up name change requests, if applicable.
To apply by mail, fill out form DS-82 and send it in with one passport photo, your current passport, and name change documentation if necessary, as well as the appropriate fees.
Passport Renewal in Person
If even one of these statements isn't true for you, you'll have to apply in person at a passport acceptance facility. These are often located in post offices and municipal offices. You can find the closest one to you at the Department of State's website. If you don't have your current passport or it's been damaged, bring proof of identity and proof of citizenship as well as your photo and fees.

Getting Your Renewal Quickly

Normal passport processing takes about 6 weeks.

If you're in a hurry, you can request expedited service by writing "Expedite" on the envelope you use to send the application and enclosing an additional $60 expedite fee. Expedited applications are generally processed within 3 weeks.

If you need your passport more quickly, you can make an appointment at the regional passport agency office in Minneapolis. This office is open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm every weekday except Wednesday. On Wednesday, it's open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

If you can't make it during those hours, you could also use a private passport expediting company to submit your application.

What About Enhanced Driver's Licenses?

Michigan residents have the option of applying for an enhanced driver's license (EDL) which contains an RFID chip to make it harder to tamper with. Could this substitute for a US passport renewal?

If you're crossing into Canada by land or by water, yes. Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, you can use an EDL for travel to and from Canada by land or sea. However, flights into or out of Canada require a US passport book, and an EDL will not be accepted.

The Ways In Accomplishing An Expedited Passport Renewal

Being able to take a journey abroad, worry free, is a hope all travelers share. There are things one can do to make this wish a reality. One is to make sure that when someone is about to go abroad, his travel documents have at least nine months of validity on them. If this is not the case, he should take steps to have the travel document renewed. For those who have upcoming plans, a faster way of revalidating the documents is to apply for an expedited U.S. passport renewal.

The valid life of the document and it's American passport pages depends on how old the owner was when he got it. If he was less than 16 years old at that time, his passport's validity is five years.

Someone who got his papers at 16 years and older will have a ten-year validity.

Each of us can apply for a renewal anytime but some conditions need to be met. The passport must not be damaged significantly. The document must not be expired for more than five years. If both conditions are true, the owner is required to apply for a new one. Expired passports are still accepted as long as the date stamped on it is within five years.

The good thing about renewing a passport is that it can be done entirely by mail. All those who are renewing their papers have to send them to the National Passport Processing Center. This is the only address that they have to remember.

There is an application form that is required to start the process. This is Form DS-82. This document is available for free at most public libraries and post offices. If one has access to the Internet, the form can be downloaded from the website of the State Department.

The mailing envelope that will hold all the papers has to be large enough to contain everything without folding any of the documents. Together with the filled in application form, place the old passport, a recent picture of the correct format, and the payment inside the envelope. Mail the envelope to the processing center. Those who had a name change will have to include proof of the facts related to that change. This could be a marriage certificate or a court order for those who got divorced.

To indicate that the transaction is an expedited passport renewal, the word "EXPEDITE" must be clearly printed on the envelope. Compared to regular processing of the document, which takes four to six weeks, an expedited application takes less than three weeks or less. The applicant should know that this transaction is more expensive than a regular application for renewing the travel document.

About the Author

Everyone should have their expedited U.S. passport renewal as soon as the validity left in them is nearing nine months. One is discouraged from going abroad if this document is near its expiry date.

Most airlines will refuse to board anyone whose documents expire less than six months after the date that is stamped on their return trip or if they are lacking USA passport pages.

Should You Get a Passport Card For Your Next Passport Renewal?

2008, the US government began issuing a new type of passport, the US passport card. Now, when you renew your passport, you may notice that the passport renewal application asks you whether or not you would like to apply for a passport card. You can apply for a passport card either instead of or in addition to your regular passport book, but should you?

To answer that question, we must look at the differences between a passport book and a passport card. The passport card was made to be more convenient and easier to carry than a passport book.

About the size of a driver's license or credit card, it fits easily into your wallet. It's also less expensive, $20 compared to $75 for a passport renewal.

However, unlike your passport book, a passport card is only valid in certain situations. You can use your passport book to travel just about anywhere. A passport card, on the other hand, will only get you to Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean, and then only if you are traveling by land or sea. Passport cards are not valid for air travel, even if you are flying to one of those regions.

As you can see, due to the limitations of the passport card, most travelers should apply for a regular passport book when they renew their passports. A passport card is best for people who need to drive across the border for short, regular trips to Canada and Mexico.

However, the passport card is only $20, so it can't hurt to apply for one during your next passport renewal. Just make sure you get the passport book, too, if necessary.

All about passports and visas for your Italy Vacation

When traveling to Italy there are several things you must have. The least of these are a passport and maybe even a visa. If this is your first time traveling out of the US, you will need to apply for a passport. You may also need to apply for a passport if your old one has expired, is damaged or lost.

Applying for a passport is a fairly simple process which may be as simple as a trip to the post office, but be sure to start early so you can be ready. There are stories of people who have had to cancel vacations because their passport was not ready.

The US Department of State asks that you allow six months for them to process your passport application, however some travelers have found it only took a few weeks. You can apply online, however first time applicants must apply in person. The main supporting document that is required is a valid original US birth certificate. Passport applicants are sometimes surprised to find that their original birth certificate needs to be submitted to the Department of State with a promise of it being mailed back. Many people tend to be leery of this especially because they have found how difficult it is to get a replacement birth certificate. However, most report that within a short period of receiving their new passports, their birth certificates arrive in the mail safe and sound. For all the details on where the 9000 passport application accepting facilities are, and how to apply for a passport for your Italy vacation you can go to www.travel.state.gov/passport

If you are a US citizen, you will not need a visa to travel to Italy. However, you must show that your airline ticket includes a return back to the US. If you are planning to travel to Italy for reasons other than a vacation, the requirements are different and usually stricter. When on vacation in Italy, you can stay for a maximum of 3 months at a time, but remember that this is a combined period to include any time spent in several other European countries. Italy has an embassy in Washington DC that can process visas for non-US citizens. They must go to the embassy for personal interviews. If you are going to Italy for a vacation the prime concern of the Italian government is that you plan to return to your country. Therefore they always ask for proof that you have a full-time job especially if you are a non-US citizen. The Department of State recommends that during your Italy vacation you register your presence there with the US embassy. This is important in case someone needs to contact you for an emergency, or in case of a disaster abroad so your whereabouts can be confirmed.

Advice For First Time Passport Applicants

How to apply for a U.S passport:

--Do you need a passport or a visa? A visa is issued by the country you are going to, and is necessary if you intend to stay for a long period of time. Obviously, the length of time before a visa is required varies by the country.

--Plan ahead. The process of obtaining a passport is not difficult, but it usually takes about three weeks. So don't postpone your application if you are planning to travel overseas.

--If you need a faster response, an expedited processing will cost an additional $60, whether you are applying for a first-time passport, or renewing an existing one.

--You will need a certified birth certificate, two identical passport-size photos (2X2 inches), your social security card and your drivers license.

--You must apply in person if this is your first U.S. passport application; or if your previous US passport expired and was issued when you were under 16; or if your name has changed since your passport was issued and you do not yet have a legal document formally changing your name.

--Remember, your passport is the only valid ID accepted once you cross an international border.

Carry it with you at all times (a money belt is an excellent investment before you leave, and will be the ideal place to carry this and other important documents).

--If your passport is lost or stolen while your are in another country, go immediately to the nearest US embassy or consulate to have a replacement issued.

--For more information, visit the US Department of State's website at http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html.

Visa and Passport - The Most Essential

Obviously visa and passport are the most integral part of your journey. In fact, this is the most important aspect of which one must be knowledgeable in order to embark on a foreign tour. The two small yet the most worthwhile documents decide the fate of your touring a particular destination in the world. Every country has different norms on issuing the visa to the visitors from different countries. However, some of the steps are common in order to obtain a visa for a specific country. Of course, Romania is no exception to all these facts.

The foreign citizens willing to go on a tour of Romania can obtain visa from the Romanian embassy or consulate.

However, the short-term visitors and citizens of the countries that concluded with Romania agreements concerning abolition of visas are not entitled for obtaining the same through this channel. Citizens of EU and NATO member states are eligible to get the visa at the border. Australian, Japanese, Israeli and Swiss people, too, have the privilege to obtain the visa at the border.

The process of application is quite simple. An aspirant simply needs to apply personally to any Romanian Embassy or Consulate. And the applicant might need to turn up again at the embassy after 2 to 30 days to collect his or her visa. Visa can be issued for single and multiple entries. Of course, a valid document recognized by Romanian State like passport is needed to obtain the visa for this country. Types of visa and passport Romania, fees the eligible states could be found on the official site of Romania on the Internet.

How to Get an Expedited Passport in Time For Your Holiday

When you're ready to go on holiday, you make certain that you have everything you need on hand - your luggage, maps of the area you'll be visiting, your tickets... everything is in order. But what about your passport? If you haven't already obtained your passport, don't worry there's still time. As long as your trip is approximately four weeks away, you can still get an expedited passport in time for your journey. Getting an expedited passport isn't nearly as difficult as you may believe, which is why in this article we want to cover everything you need to know about getting your passport quickly.

How To File For An Expedited Passport

This first thing you need to understand about filing is that it is going to cost you a bit more than if you were willing to wait the full six to eight weeks that normal delivery takes. The average cost for a new passport is around $100, with a renewal being approximately $75. The additional fee for an expedited passport is roughly $60, depending on where you file for your passport. This additional fee will need to be sent in with the regular fee and all of your paperwork.

You can request to get an expedited passport from a number of various places. The most common place is at your local post office. Although some post offices will allow you to simply walk in and apply, most will require you to make an appointment. When you go in for your appointment, make sure that you have all of your paperwork in hand; as well as whatever additional fee the post office may charge.

You can also apply at a number of offices set up specifically for that purpose. There are a number of passport acceptance facilities located throughout the country, each of whom can process your paperwork and forward it to the appropriate passport agency. These acceptance facilities will charge a processing fee over and above the actual cost of your passport.

You can also apply directly from the government. You will need to send in the appropriate fees for the cost of processing and the expedition fee, as well as the rest of your paperwork; but by applying yourself, you can save yourself the fee charged by acceptance facilities and only pay the actual amount of the passport itself.

The main thing you need to remember is to take all of your paperwork and identification with you when you go. You'll also need to take at least two passport worthy photos, which can be obtained at a number of places including mailing stores and acceptance facilities. Having these will help to ensure that the process of applying for an expedited passport goes smoothly.

Reasons To Use American Passport Expediting Services

Anyone who tries to travel outside the country will require a passport. This is something good to apply for with time, even if you do not plan to travel any time in the near future. If you have an unexpected trip that you have to make, you will not need to worry about trying to apply and obtaining a passport. For those who have that unexpected trip and did not apply within the time, do not worry.

You can still use American passport expediting services to get a passport in much quicker time.

With an expedited service, you can obtain a passport in as little as twenty four hours. For some that do not want to pay a high fee, they can also have other options such as a 10-day waiting period which will cost less. Applying for a passport without the expedited service can usually take up to 4-6 weeks after you apply, sometimes even months, to receive it.

There are two ways to obtain a passport using expediting service. The first option is the do it yourself method. That is going to the travel agency, waiting in line and filling out the application on your own.

Sometimes you do have to wait in line at the travel agency for quite some time before you can speak to a representative, depending on the amount of people there that day.

Another option, if you do not have that much time, is to allow the expediting service to apply for you.

A staff member of the company will personally go to the travel agency and wait in line for you, as well as apply and submit the application on your behalf. This can be costly. However, if you do not have the required time, you can use this option.

Once you decide if you want to do it yourself or allow the expediting services to submit your application for you, you can begin choosing which option you would like. You can choose to have your passport completed in as little as 24 hours, 2-3days, 4-6 days and even up to 10 days. The quicker you need it, the more you will have to pay. If you do not need it that same day, you can choose a longer period of time to save some money.

For those that are already at a travel location but have lost your passport, they also have the option of obtaining an emergency passport. This passport can be obtained at the US embassy in the country you are located in. You would have to apply to get one and may have it in as little as 24 hours.

An expediting service can be of great help for those that need a passport urgently. You should first begin to consider when you need your passport. Then after deciding the date, you can begin choosing the right passport option. You should also consider if you have enough time to do it yourself or if you will be needing a staff member to apply for you.

If you do not need to travel any time soon, it will still be a good idea to apply for a passport and have it handy. If you do not have one but do need to travel and cannot wait the usual time for a passport application, you can use American passport expediting services. It is also ideal for those who have lost or damaged their passport.

How to Get Expedited Passport Pages

Travel opportunities can come up suddenly. Business opportunities or spur of the moment vacations can make international excursions an unexpected requirement. The unexpected nature of these trips, however, also brings their own special problems. In particular, travelers with a short time for planning will need to be sure that all of their documents and visas are ready to go. For many, taking advantage of the services provided by professional companies, such as getting expedited passport pages, can provide some peace of mind.

The US Department of State issues passports to American citizens. In other countries comparable bureaucratic offices handle these processes. Passports are only one of several responsibilities held by this important branch of government.

The history of passports is long and interesting. In their earliest incarnations, heads of state issued letters meant to provide a degree of protection to their official messengers or envoys. In the world today, passports are used mostly as a method of monitoring security and immigration concerns. Every US citizen traveling internationally is required to obtain a passport.

No matter what country they come from, most passports look fairly similar to one another in terms of size, shape, and information contained therein. An international standard has been established among passport issuing agencies, so that documents may be shared easily between governments. Most US passports contain twenty-four pages for placing visa stamps upon entry to or exit from a country. For some travelers, collecting stamps from different entry and exit points is a fun hobby. The international stamps come in a variety of shapes and colors.

Though collecting stamps can be fun, it can also pose a problem for those faced with an unexpected travel need. Namely, if you run out of places for stamps, you will not be able to use your passport.

Luckily, to fix this situation, you can get additional pages for your passport if you have four or fewer blank pages left. The process to get the extra pages is easy.

The form needed to obtain extra pages is not complicated, and easy to obtain. On the form, you must provide phone numbers for your emergency contacts and basic personal information. Submitting the paperwork is free, and after filling it in, you can either use direct mail or send it online. In addition to the form, you will also need to send your passport to the State Department.

The State Department is a tremendous government operation that receives thousands of passport requests. Since these are not the only duties maintained by the office, you should not expect a speedy turnaround time. Most requests take at least a month. This is the central problem for those with sudden travel plans. Luckily, it is possible to request expedited service. Your passport with extra pages can be returned sooner, but this rushed service will cost an extra sixty dollars.

When travel plans come up without warning, it can cause a great deal of worry. With expedited passport pages, you can put aside at least some of your travel worries. So, order your overnight passport, finish packing and enjoy your trip.

Passport Renewal Can Be Completed by Different Methods

A passport renewal may be accomplished by any U.S. citizen by either mail or in person. Renewal by mail is only an option if the passport holder meets all the requirements. By visiting a local passport office, process will still take some time but it can be moved along a bit smoother by being on hand to provide any documentation that may be needed. There are services available online that can help to expedite this or the government offers their own version of expedited service.

There are certain criteria that must be met in order to renew by mail. The old passport must be available to be returned with the application and must be in the holder's original name. The passport cannot be more than 15 years old from date of issue and must have been issued after the holder was older than 16 years of age.

As with anything else when it comes to the government, there are forms that need to be completed.

The renewal form must be printed out or filled out online and submitted along with the old passport.

The form is easily located by going on the Internet and simply searching it out. This will need to be accompanied by two new color photos along with any applicable fees and if there is a name change since the issue date, supporting paperwork to that effect.

The passport renewal normally takes four to six weeks when done through the standard channels. The Department of State also offers an expediting service than can shorten the time to two to three weeks.

If the need should arise that necessitates receiving the passport faster than this, there are private services that can expedite the process in as little as one to two business days. These services are perfect for emergency situations but do come with an additional fee.

Should the passport holder not meet all the requirements to renew by mail, a trip to a local Passport Acceptance Facility or Regional Passport Agency will be necessary. An applicant will then need to present a properly filled out DS-11 form along with proper identification. There will also be the need to have new passport photos on hand when applying for the renewal. The private service providers can still help these applicants but there will still be a necessity to appear at a facility of this type.

The above guidelines are strictly for adults applying for a renewal, minors on the other hand have a few more guidelines that must be followed. They must apply in person no matter what, if they are still under the age of 16 or if the passport was issued while they were under that age. They then must follow the same guidelines as an adult and submit the renewal form along with pictures, ID and the processing fee, if any. The same rules for expediting apply for minors as they do adults in that they may choose either the governments offering or to go with one of the private service providers for a passport renewal.

Any U.S. citizen residing out of the country in Canada can also renew by mail if needed. Those that reside in other countries will however need to visit either the U.S. Embassy or local Consulate office to renew the passport in person. There is a complete listing of these locations that may be found online.

The passport renewal is probably most easily completed by going through the mail. If the proper criteria cannot be met by the holder, then it will be necessary to complete the process in person. It has been shown that the private expediting services can help an applicant receive their USA passport back much quicker than the stander government expediting service.

When It's Necessary to Obtain a Priority Passport

When it's necessary to obtain a priority passport, understand that it can be done but that it might take some legwork and additional money to do so. Generally speaking, most people who do need a passport in a hurry make use of one of the many different express passport expediter services existing today. In addition, other people tend to work directly with the government to get their passport in a hurry.

This isn't to say it will be extremely easy to get quickly-issued passports. In general, even expedited passports that are applied for through one of the government's regional service in centers (there are 14 spread around the country) can take from 2 to 3 weeks. There are also additional fees attached when it comes to an expedited passport issued through one of those centers, so keep that in mind.

For those who absolutely, positively need one in a rush, it might be a good idea to work through an express expediter. However, when that isn't possible, there are other means for obtaining such a passport on a priority basis by working through the government. This is going to mean, however, travel to one of those regional service centers in order to make it happen, which is something worth keeping in mind.

Outside of the use of an expediter, the first thing to do is to access the State Department's passport website. It's not really all that complicated to get a passport in a rush, which is fortunate, but remember that there are several steps involved. By following the proper steps, one can have a passport not only issued quickly but also with a minimum of fuss.

The government being the government, it'll be necessary to arrange for an appointment before showing up at a service center. On the State Department website is a toll-free number that must be called if one wants to get a passport in a single day at a service center. Priority-issuance of passports can only be done by making an appointment, and there are few, if any, exceptions to this rule.

As far as the service centers themselves, there are a number of them on both coasts and in the Midwest. New York City, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Washington DC and Los Angeles all host such centers. For passports needed on the same day as application, an appointment and travel to a service center is a must. And expect to spend all day getting it, so make an appointment early because processing can take five hours or more.

Of course, to obtain a passport that quickly, there will be additional fees required before the document can be issued. Same day passports currently cost between $200 and $300 in fees paid to the government. If any background research on citizenship or identity is needed, there's an additional $60 fee on top of the expediting fee and standard passport fees of from $25 to $95.

Remember that it's a very good idea to make an appointment at a service center for as early in the day as is practicable. Make sure to show up with American passports photographs in hand along with documents proving identity and citizenship. When it comes to the issuance of a priority passport, fees can arrange up to $300 in addition to standard passport issuance monies, which is worth keeping in mind.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Passport to Go on Vacation?

Because of new passport laws, many new people are applying for passports. One of the most common questions people ask is, 'how long to get a passport?' This is a complicated question and there is no definite answer. The following article will try to explain the passport process and inform a new applicant what they can expect in terms of a passport time frame.

First, it is important to note that passport applications have skyrocketed in recent years. This is not due to a spike in international travel, but is instead due to a new law that requires passports for land travel to border countries. The law, which went into effect on June 1st, 2009, made passports mandatory for travel between the U.S. and Mexico or Canada. Word of this law caused a spike in passport applications as early as 2006.

The applicant is responsible for the first step of the application process. The applicant must obtain passport photos, a government issued ID card, and a proof of citizenship. The faster this part of the application is completed, the faster the whole process will go.

When everything is together, it is time to head to a pass port office to start the application process. In the United States, local post offices are the primary sources to get a passport application. While not every post office processes passport applications, many of them have this ability. It is best to check the USPS website for exact locations that offer this service.

Once the application has been approved by the application center, it is sent off for processing. This is the longest part of the application process. This is also the part of the application that worries most new applicants, as this part of the application has been known to take a great deal of time.

Today, the whole process is more efficient and worry free. Anyone that wants to go through normal channels can expect to get their passport in about two months. If that seems excessive, compare it to waiting over six months before these new laws went into effect. The entire process is much more efficient now.

The State Department also offers a passport-expedited service. Currently the waiting period for expedited passports is two to three weeks. The cost of an expedited passport is $60 plus the cost of overnight delivery. The State Department also offers various types of super-rush passports for dire emergencies. Obviously, it is best to try to plan ahead to avoid this kind of hassle. Applicants can also save significant money by obtaining the passport through standard channels.

Clearly, there is no one answer to the question, 'How long to get a passport?' It depends on the time of year and the type of year. A fair average is one to two months, but it is impossible to be sure. The best method to ensure that your passport arrives on time is to apply at your local American passport office long before you think you will need one.

USA Passport Application - Fill it Out Correctly Or Get Acquitted Like Goldman Sachs Executives

If you are a US citizen who is looking forward to travel outside the country, you must first acquire a passport for yourself. The US department of State provides a passport after an American citizen has applied for it. Every American citizen has a right to obtain a passport which not only allows him to travel abroad but also works as an identity proof for him that confirms his citizenship. This official document issued by the government is a valid proof that allows you to travel across the world. You can go ahead with a USA passport application by yourself or hire an attorney to do it for you.

Application or renewal

Acquiring a passport will not happen overnight. So you will have to apply for the passport well in advance of the travel dates. You can collect a form and fill it up according to the United States Passport Application and Renewal guide. This is an important and dependable guide which you can follow to understand the requirements. It tells you who are eligible to apply, requirements for application, procedures to be followed, terms and conditions, amount of the fees, and how to speed up the process. If you fill in wrong or false details you may be facing penalty just like the Goldman Sachs executives. You have an option of submitting the hard copy of the form or submitting it online to any passport official along with a proof of your identity. Following the normal procedure the passport takes 30 to 45 days to reach your home.

If you want to speed up the process, you may do so by paying an expedite fee. On payment of this fee, you will be able to attain your passport within a matter of ten to fourteen days. If you are applying for passport renewal, there are a few points that are considered. Firstly the passport should not be damaged, the holder should have been at least 16 years old when the passport was issued, and you should have the same name as it is mentioned in the passport. If these criteria are not met then you will have to apply for a new passport. It is very important that your passport is not damaged in any manner or else it could lead to prosecution and the document becoming invalid.

Renew Your US Passport Or Risk Ruining Your Next Vacation!

You're excited about your next trip to Europe and have spent months planning every little detail. You count the days and finally you're packing and heading off to the airport. You know you've put your passport in your carry on and are a bit smug at remembering to bring this important document.

You stand confidently in the airport security line, smile as you hand your passport to the official, then watch with bewilderment as he asks you to step aside. What's going on? As if in a dream, you hear the security official point accusingly to the expiration date on your passport. How can it be? Your passport has expired!

This really is a nightmare scenario to any traveler, but it's totally avoidable. If you're reading this, go find your passport right now and check the expiration date. That's right, go! I'll wait until you return.

Okay, if you're still reading, then it's likely your passport expiration date may be past, be here soon or within 6 months of expiring. Hopefully you're not leaving tomorrow for your vacation to Europe. You can actually renew a US passport relatively quickly and easily so don't despair.

US passports can be renewed by mail, which is very convenient. The United States Department of State even has a specific form to use called a DS-82, "Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail". The form is available to download and print online at the Department of State web site, or you can pick it up at just about any U.S. Post Office. You might want to consider the overdue haircut or that new style you've been eager to try, because you're going to need to produce 2 new passport photos. I know you think you look exactly the same as you did 10 years ago, despite what your friends say, but the State Department wants new photos anyway. Find a passport agency that can take passport photos per the standards and include those with your mail in application. Make a copy of everything before sealing the envelope and don't forget to also drop in your current passport. Use a traceable mail method, such as certified mail, and make sure the envelope you've selected is durable and waterproof.

Accidents happen, so plan for the worst!

It will take around 3 or 4 weeks to get your new passport, but if that's too long check into the "expedited" service, if you're willing to pay a bit more. Check the Department of State web site, which is up to date and full of useful information, to find out the price for this and any other information not covered here.

Once you get your shiny new passport, you can rest easy knowing that nightmare won't come true for you. Just don't forget to pack your toothbrush!

How to Find the Closest Passport Office

With over 8,000 passport offices in the United States, you may wonder where to start when looking for a passport office. The Bureau of Consular Affairs, a department within the U.S. Department of State, has authorized many different agencies to perform passport services. Post offices, State Department offices, town and local government buildings are just some of the authorized passport service agencies.

Most people typically start by contacting their local post office. Many post offices are set up for passport processing, and that includes passport photos, which have very strict guidelines. For people residing in medium to large cities, there is usually a wide selection available. But for persons living in rural areas or towns which don't have passport facilities, it can be a challenge finding an alternative.

If you have internet access, navigate to the U.S. Department of State web site. This is a very informative resource which provides a wealth of passport information, including locations of passport offices. Look for the link titled "Passport Acceptance Facility Search Page". Here you can search for all available passport offices in several different ways.

Enter in your zip code and select the maximum mile radius to search. Searching by City and State is also an easy way to get a complete list. People with special needs such as disability access can narrow their search for facilities which meet those needs. As you'll need to have 2 official passport photographs taken to submit with your application, there's the option to only display offices that are also set up for that process.

The U.S. Postal Service also has a very informative web site which will help with searching just those post offices which have passport services.

Since passport application requires a face-to-face interaction, in order to verify your identity, you may wish to schedule an appointment at the location you've selected. Drop in services are typically available at most offices, but during busy summer months the lines can be long. It's a good idea to schedule a morning appointment as delays can happen, causing you to have to wait for your afternoon visit.

Overseas U.S. citizens can apply for a passport at the U.S. Consulate or U.S. Embassy of the country they are currently residing in.

There are many offices available to assist you with applying for your passport. Just a little research will help you locate the one closest to you.

How to Get an American Passport Without Leaving Your New York City Desk

Life plans can change in a New York minute. One minute you're at work planning a late supper with your kids, and the next minute a travel order falls across your desk. Instead of mentally preparing a dinner menu, you find yourself scrambling to make last-minute international travel arrangements.

Between board meetings, teleconferences and piles of paperwork, the last thing you have time to do is leave the office to renew a passport. Fortunately for the busy executive, you can get an American passport in NYC without leaving your desk.

Filling out an online passport application saves the time and trouble of going in person and waiting in line at a passport processing agency. All types of expedited passport applications can be accessed via the web, including 24 hr passports/renewals and 2 day passport/passport renewals as long as you still have your old passport, it was issued to you at age 16 or older and within the past 15 years, and is in good condition. The steps are simple:

1) Fill out an online US passport renewal application. Make sure that all blanks are filled out. Any omission of information will cause extra delays in getting your application processed.

2) Provide all of the necessary documentation. You must supply your old passport. If your name has changed since your last passport was issued, you must also supply documentation to support the name change. This includes a marriage certificate or legal name-change certificate. You must also supply two passport regulation photos. These can be obtained quickly at almost any photo processing outlet. All documentation must be original; photocopied documents are not accepted.

3) Ship all of your documentation to the address provided to you by the online passport application processing agency. Often shipping is included in the cost of your online application. Otherwise, make sure you choose a reliable carrier and purchase shipping insurance. These documents are costly and difficult to replace so it's worth the small price of insurance to protect yourself from financial loss and identity theft. Once your application has been processed and approved, your documentation will be returned to you in like manner.

If you need to obtain an emergency visa application, add visa pages to a passport or add passport pages overnight in New York, you can also do so via the web. Again, you'll need to provide your old passport, plus a name-change certificate if applicable.

Your cost depends on how quickly you need your passport. No doubt it gives you peace of mind to know that adding passport rush in NYC from your desk is possible. No need to cancel those important meetings. You might even still be able to catch dinner with the kids before grabbing that flight abroad.

What You Need to Know About the US Passport

The modern passport contains many characteristics that enhance the appearance and safety aspects for travel. These ensure that tourists can have a smooth passage into the country of destination.

Essentials: Every regular US passport contains a few standard features - a blue cover page with the Great Seal of America affixed on it, a personal data page and a page carrying the signature of the bearer and a message from the US Secretary of State requesting permission to enter a foreign country.
The passport covers for diplomats and officials, however, differ from regular ones. Each passport contains a standard of 32 pages, or 52 pages for frequent flyers such as businessmen.

Visa access: Some countries, such as China and Australia, require visas for entry into the country. The time taken and cost for visa application varies from country to country. A vast majority of countries in the world, including most of Europe and Japan, do not require any prior visas to enter.

For information as to whether to apply for a visa, do remember to check the Foreign Affairs website of the country you re about to visit, or simply enquire with your travel agent.

Safety: The new US passport now contains an electronic chip that stores all your bio-data and passport information. This is not only to ensure that no changes are made to the passport illegally, but also to allow for a faster checkout at the immigrations.

Passport card: An alternative to the passport booklet is the passport card, specifically for travel to countries in North American - Canada, Bermuda, Mexico and the Caribbean. It might be a good idea to apply for a card instead of a standard booklet if you are traveling to these countries, since it is not only more portable, but also cheaper.

Validity: Both booklets and cards are valid for 10 years for an adult, or 5 years for a minor under 16 years of age.

Application: Applying for a passport can be done in person at any passport agency or acceptance facility. Current costs for an adult passport booklet are $100 and $85 for minors, or $45 for an adult passport card and $25 for minors. Passport renewals can be done through the internet and mail.

These are just some of the basics of a US passport, and would serve any traveler well when using or trying to obtain one.

The Passport Application Process For United States Citizens

Applying for a passport may not be on your top-ten list of things to do, but it is worth your while to take the time to apply for this important document. Not only will it speed you through travel security lines, both inside of and outside of the United States, but it will come in handy for any situation which requires a photo identification that is accepted around the world.

Passports are a verification of who you say you are as well as a confirmation of your citizenship. No other document needs to meet the strict qualifications and supporting evidence that's required to apply for a passport, which is why it is so widely accepted. There are several steps when applying for a first time passport, but since your passport is good for 10 years, and renewal is much easier, you'll only have to go through this level of work once.

Start by locating a passport acceptance and processing office close to you. A United States Post Office meets this requirement and is the most familiar and convenient for many people. Libraries and local government buildings also qualify. You can check in the phone book or visit the web site for the United States Department of State and use their convenient search link. This link lets you search by zip code and distance as well as city and state. You can further refine your search if handicapped access is required and it's worth narrowing the list to those that also produce passport photographs.

Speaking of passport photos, these can't just be your favorite shot from your last vacation. As with a driver's license, the picture must meet certain requirements, such as size and composition. Local copy centers such as Kinko's also typically make passport photos, but if you select a processing site that does this service, you'll be saving yourself an extra trip.

The passport application itself can be downloaded from the U.S. Department of State web site, or picked up at the application center. If you download and print it at home, check it carefully as anything smudged, smeared or illegible will cause it to be rejected.

Use only black ink to fill it in and don't sign it before showing up in person at the processing center. The official will need to witness your signature.

Since citizenship is verified before a passport is issued, you'll also need a certified and embossed Birth Certificate, Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization Certificate. These must be originals, not copies. If you need to write away for a replacement certificate, it's a good idea to order 2 so you'll always have a spare. Photocopies of these important documents are seldom accepted as proof of citizenship.

As you may have guessed, passports aren't free, so be prepared to pay. Fees change over time but the typical cost is around $100.00. Photos are an extra charge, depending on where you have them taken, but typically that's between $10.00 and $20.00. If you're rushed and need your passport expedited, add on more money. Mailing fees can also add up, as sending by a traceable method is highly recommended.

You'll need to wait approximately 2 to 3 weeks to receive your passport, but allow a few more weeks on top of that just to be safe. Starting the application process at least a month or more before you need your passport will allow for any unexpected problems. Soon you'll be the proud owner of a U.S. Passport and will find yourself smiling as you sail though those long security lines at the airport!

Canadian Passports - Be In The "Know" Or Prepared To Be Frustrated

If you are planning to apply for a Canadian passport, you need to know the application procedures and the time required to get a passport in order to get it before your upcoming trip. With heightened international security passports are required for travel into territories that once only required valid I.D.

While in-person applications are usually processed in two weeks (this excludes delivery delay), your applications sent via mail or through a receiving agent (Canada Post or Services Canada) may take up to ten weeks. While this is best case scenario, passport application requests are at an all time high and you need to ask your local issuing office what the turnaround time is.

For applications sent through mail from the U.S. will require about twelve weeks to process them. Sometimes, there may be a delay in getting your passport due to the rapidly growing volume of passport applications that the passport office receives each day.

It is obvious from the time frame mentioned above that you wouldn't want a further delay in getting your Canadian passport, which you may badly require to go on a holiday or a business trip.

Use the checklist listed below to rule out the possibility of making common errors that lead to delay in getting your Canadian passport:

Have you sent your application well in advance before your scheduled trip?

It's your responsibility to ensure that you have filled the Canadian passport application form correctly. Incomplete or incorrect forms can be rejected and ruin your chances of going abroad.

If you are applying for a new passport because you lost your old one or it was stolen, you need to submit a Statutory Declaration form (PPT 203) along with your application. You can download this form from the website http://www.passportcanada.gc.ca and avoid delay in processing your application.

Have you filled in the date of travel box on the application form? Since this filed cannot be left blank, you must either enter your date of travel or mark it as "unknown".

Before submitting your form, make sure that your personal and citizenship information has been filled. Often, people forget to fill up important details such as height, weight, hair color, and phone number(s).

When applying for your Canadian passport, you need to attach a legal document to prove your Canadian citizenship. While enclosing documents, please be aware that you cannot send a photocopy of the documents.

One reason why passport application may not be accepted is that the photos furnished are not identical. Make sure that you get your photos from commercial photographers who understand the specific requirements. Before submitting the photographs, make sure that your guarantor signs the back of one photo. Your passport photo must be clear and must show a neutral facial expression.

Another important document to be enclosed with your application form is the identification document. You need to either send an original copy of your Identification documents or send clear and legible photocopies (of both the sides) of the documents. If you are planning to send photocopies, your guarantor must certify them. It is important that the name on the identification documents matches the name you have mentioned in your passport application form.

You need to ensure that your guarantor has completed the section 2 (Declaration of Guarantor) of the application form before you submit your passport application.

And last but not the least, don't forget to sign the Canadian passport application form and enclose the fees with your Canadian passport application form.
