Applying for United States passports can be very exciting if
you're getting a passport for the first time to travel to an exotic and
exciting new country. Having your own passport allows you to go outside
of the United States and travel the world. Traveling around the 50
states does not require a passport, but you do need one if you want to
expand your horizons by going to another country. As you know, all
immigration offices around the world require a proof of your identity
and citizenship before you enter their territory.
You may have
heard from traveling friends some complaints about applying for a
passport. It can be a bit of a time-consuming endeavor, but when the
result is the world it's well worth it. There are quite a few
requirements that need to be met before you can get your passport, such
as filling out the US passport application and presenting it and other
necessary paperwork to a local acceptance facility or passport agency.
Getting
your passport can take a bit longer if you fall under any of some
certain specific situations. Has your name been changed since your last
passport was issued and you don't have documentation for the change? Has
it been more than 15 years since you obtained your current passport?
Were you under 16 when your current passport was issued or are you under
16 right now? Is this your first passport? Was your old passport
stolen, lost, or damaged? If you answered "yes" to any one of these, you
need to apply in person.
You also need to fulfill other
requirements such as submitting US passport photographs and proof of
identity, along with the application. Once this has been done, you will
need to allow for the time to process the passport information. Don't
worry, though, as everyone needs to go through the same process.
How
long does it take to get a passport? For routine passport services, it
usually takes four to six weeks before you receive your passport. Too
long for you? Take advantage of the option that allows you to rush your
passport application.
If you're wondering how to get your passport
sooner, there's the option to use an expedited passport service. If you
use this service, you will be able to receive your passport in just two
to three weeks. This is the option you have should use if you need to
travel in less than a month.
Obtaining a US passport is quite
inexpensive for what it allows you to do. The current rates for a
passport application are $95 for applicants under 16, and $120 for
people 16 and above. For expedited passport services, additional charges
will apply.
When planning to take your trip outside the United States, add in
the waiting time for the required passport to your travel plans. This
way you won't be surprised or caught unaware. Four to six weeks for your
passport application to be approved will pass quickly and with the expedited service you will have your passport in your hand almost before your suitcase is packed! Ready, set, travel!
