There Are a Variety of Options For Passport Replacement

Sometimes things happen and passport replacement is necessary. There are plenty of reasons that this can happen, but regardless of why it happened, the passport still has to be replaced. The tricky part in this process is that varying reasons will have different regulations as to how the new passport can be obtained.

Losing a passport is a nightmare for a variety of reasons. When this happens, the passport holder must immediately contact the State Department and let them know what has happened. Once they have done that, they can get the ball rolling on getting a new one.

When it has officially been reported as missing, the applicant can then get the forms to replace a lost passport. Know right up front that when a passport is stolen, the process is pretty much identical to getting a new passport for the very first time again, except there are additional forms to be filled out. When all of this has been completed, the forms are turned in and the replacement should arrive in about 6 weeks or so.

If the passport is lost during a trip, everything changes. When this happens, a trip to the local embassy is in order (or the consulate office if an embassy is not there). The staff at either of these locations is familiar with the process and will expedite everything to make sure that the traveler can get home without much difficulty.

Expired passports are pretty easy to handle as long as there is not a rush and everything can be handled over the Internet and via the mail. All forms are available online and can be downloaded and filled out. Put the old passport, any additional documentation that is required and the forms in an overnight envelope and ship them off.

Getting a new passport because of damage pretty much requires all of the same steps as an expired passport. Just remember to include the old passport with all the documents as the government requires that the old passport be turned in for the new one. This is to prevent an expired passport from falling into the wrong hands and someone using that to obtain a new passport.

Should the passport get damaged when the person is on their trip, it should still be okay to use to get back into the country as long as the passport number is visible. It would still be a good idea to stop by the embassy and make sure that it will be accepted. When returning home, get the forms and mail them off to have the damaged passport replaced.

For all of the laws and regulations regarding passport replacement, it is best to check the State Department website. This is mostly because laws are known to change and reading anything from any other source may be outdated. This will ensure that the right procedures are being followed and that the new passport will be received on time and without any difficulty.
