National Security - The Part That Passports Play

Boarder security is in the headlines a lot lately and rightfully so. Passports play a big roll in making it possible for illegals and terrorists to cause problems. Since they know how to get a passport, the security of the United States has been compromised. Recently, you may have seen on the news the story about the spies actually being caught within our borders.

New York was recently in the papers concerning the ten Russian spies that were caught. Anna Chapman was one of them and she and nine other Russian spies plead guilty to "conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign country" and for getting sensitive information for a foreign government. They had also participated in money laundering but those charges were cancelled. The United States chose to exchange these spied for four American spied currently held in Russia. Not since the Cold War has such a large espionage issue occurred.

During 2002, Anna Chapman, whose Russian name is Anya Kushchenko, married Alex Chapman, a man from England. They divorced in 2006 but their marriage gave her credibility that made her espionage activities much easier. At the beginning of their marriage, Alex Chapman through he and Anna were happy but as she renew Russian friendships, she grew away from him and eventually they divorced.

After moving to New York, she commenced her collaboration with the Russians. After a time, she became fearful that she was the subject of suspicion by U.S. agents and called her father in Russia, Vasily Kushchenko, to tell him of her concerns. This phone call was a real break for U.S. agents and was instrumental in leading to her capture.

After being discovered, her citizenship in the United Kingdom was cancelled as well as her passport thereby revoking her re-admittance to the United Kingdom. This was a good example of just how important a passport is. The US passport bureau is diligent in checking to be sure that fake passports are identified in the name of national security. This is a big job because it is well known all over the world how important and powerful a passport really is.

It is really scary to realize how easy it was for ten Russian spies to live amongst American citizens and act as though they were loyal Americans and yet, all the while, they were doing everything they could to relay information concerning the United States that could be harmful to us. Our government and the US passport bureau are busy with efforts to short circuit the evil acts of those who seek to use US passports to enter the United States. It is no secret how to get a passport so the job is great. Stolen passports only compound the problem so keep your passport in a safe place and notify the national authorities if you ever suspect it is lost or stolen.
